DAVAO’S FIRST G6PD DEFICIENCY SUPPORT GROUP FORUM HELD



The first Davao's G6PD Deficiency Support Group Forum was held last June 2010 at Southern Philippines Medical Center. In attendance were parents of G6PD deficient babies from Davao City, Panabo City, Comval Province, Davao del Sur, General Santos City, CARAGA and Sultan Kudarat. Dr. Conchita G. Abarquez, a geneticist and Head of Newborn Screening Center-Mindanao, discussed the facts and cleared the myths on G6PD Deficiency disorder.

Due to the overwhelming support of the parents, a set of officers were elected to lead the support group. The elected officers are: Ana Theresa Basilio, President; Charlie Casane, VIice-President; Eastern de Guzman, Treasurer; Dr. Cherry Ann Alalong, Secretary; and Elinor Marcelino, Public Relations Officer.

Meet the NSC-Mindanao staff

Newly opened Newborn Screening Center—Mindanao is now running the samples coming from all over Mindanao. It started its full operations on October 2009. It is the third NSC accredited by DOH and international newborn screening experts. NSC-M is headed by Dr Conchita Abarquez with Dr Remedios Menor as Laboratory Head and Sheila Guilaran as Program Manager.
